Hoka vs Merrell for Hiking and Walking: Which Fits You?
Hoka or Merrell? Choose Hoka if you want a soft, thick, low-drop ride for long miles on hard ground. Choose Merrell if you want a classic, roomy hiking shoe with a higher heel and a Wide option in every Moab 3 version. For hiking boots, the matchup is the Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX against the Merrell Moab 3 Mid; for walking and lighter trails, it is the Bondi 9 or Speedgoat against the low Moab 3. Here is how they compare on fit, drop, weight, waterproofing and durability.
Quick Answer
Hoka builds max-cushion shoes with a low heel-to-toe drop and, on models like the Bondi 9, a rocker sole that rolls you forward. Merrell‘s Moab 3 family is a traditional hiker: an 11.5 mm drop, a nylon arch shank and a firmer, more planted feel. Neither brand is better overall; they suit different feet and different preferences.
- Drop: Hoka lists 5 mm for the Bondi 9 and Speedgoat, 8 mm for the Anacapa 2 Low GTX and 10 mm for the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX. Merrell lists 11.5 mm for every Moab 3.
- Width: every Moab 3 version is sold in Medium and Wide. The Bondi 9 comes in Regular, Wide and X-Wide, but Hoka’s US page listed the men’s Anacapa 2 Mid GTX in Regular only.
- Waterproofing: Hoka’s Anacapa 2 boots use GORE-TEX. Merrell sells the Moab 3 with its own waterproof membrane (WP) or with GORE-TEX (GTX).

Two Design Philosophies
Hoka began in trail running and built its name on thick, soft midsoles. Much of its line pairs a high stack of foam with a low drop, and many models use what Hoka calls a MetaRocker, a curved sole that helps the foot roll from heel to toe. The Bondi 9, for example, lists a Smooth MetaRocker and a rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame. Hoka’s hiking boots carry the same idea: a cushioned EVA midsole under a GORE-TEX upper.
Merrell‘s Moab line takes a more traditional approach. The Moab 3 has an 11.5 mm drop, a molded nylon arch shank, an air cushion in the heel and a Super Rebound Compound midsole, according to Merrell. The result feels more planted and less bouncy.
One detail is easy to miss: the Hoka boot is not taller at the heel. RunRepeat measured 34.4 mm of heel stack on the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX against 36.1 mm on the Moab 3 Mid GTX. The difference is under the forefoot (25.4 mm against 22.6 mm), which is why the Hoka has the lower drop and more cushioning at toe-off.
Specs Compared: Hiking Boots
Manufacturer figures for the men’s versions. Hoka does not say which size it weighs, so treat small weight gaps with caution.

What the Lab Measurements Show
RunRepeat measures every boot with the same method, so these numbers are comparable. Lower outsole wear is better; a higher bend force means a stiffer boot.
| Measurement (RunRepeat) | Anacapa 2 Mid GTX | Moab 3 Mid GTX |
|---|---|---|
| Weight per shoe | 494 g / 17.4 oz | 495 g / 17.5 oz |
| Measured drop | 9.0 mm | 13.5 mm |
| Heel / forefoot stack | 34.4 / 25.4 mm | 36.1 / 22.6 mm |
| Forefoot width (midsole) | 115.9 mm | 111.9 mm |
| Lug depth | 5.0 mm | 5.0 mm |
| Outsole wear in abrasion test | 1.0 mm | 1.2 mm |
| Force to bend 30 degrees | 24.9 N | 31.8 N |
| Sizing (owner votes on RunRepeat) | True to size | About half a size small |
The Hoka sits on a wider platform, which adds stability, but RunRepeat describes a medium-width fit with a toe box slightly narrower than average. The Moab 3 Mid GTX measured wider than average at the toe box. In short, the Hoka is stable because of its base; the Merrell is roomy because of its upper.
Head-to-Head: Who Wins Where
Cushioning and joint comfort: Hoka
If hard trails or long descents leave your feet sore, try Hoka first. The Anacapa 2 has more foam under the forefoot and a softer midsole than the Moab 3 Mid in RunRepeat’s durometer test, and Hoka calls the Bondi 9 ultra-cushioned. Not everyone likes this feel on uneven ground. If you have a foot or knee condition, ask a physiotherapist or podiatrist which type suits you.
Wide feet: Merrell
Every Moab 3 version is sold in Wide, and the Moab 3 Mid GTX toe box measured roomier than average. Hoka offers Wide and X-Wide in the Bondi 9 and Wide in the Speedgoat 7, but Hoka’s US page listed the men’s Anacapa 2 Mid GTX in Regular only. In the Zappos reviews of the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX we read, the most frequent complaint was a narrow toe box or heel. For a wide hiking boot, the Moab 3 is the easier choice.
Heel drop: depends on your body
Merrell’s 11.5 mm drop is high for modern footwear and will feel familiar if you have worn traditional boots. Hoka lists 5 mm for the Bondi 9 and Speedgoat (RunRepeat measured 9.1 mm on the Bondi 9). If you switch from a high-drop boot to a 5 mm Hoka, ease in with shorter walks, and ask a physiotherapist first if you have calf or Achilles problems. For more on low-drop footwear, see our guide to zero-drop and barefoot walking shoes.
Weight: a tie for boots, Hoka for low shoes
As mid boots the two are almost identical on RunRepeat’s scale. In low shoes Hoka is clearly lighter: 9.8 oz for the Speedgoat 6 and 10.5 oz for the Bondi 9 by Hoka’s spec, against 460 g (16.2 oz) per shoe for the low Moab 3 by Merrell’s.
Waterproofing: more choice with Merrell
RunRepeat lists waterproofing as a strength of both boots, though it notes that the Anacapa’s membrane does not extend all the way up the collar. The difference is choice. Merrell offers its own membrane (WP), the lower-priced option, and GORE-TEX (GTX). Both Anacapa 2 boots use GORE-TEX. In hot weather a non-waterproof shoe will be cooler; read how to waterproof hiking shoes if you want something in between.
Durability: close, with different weak points
Neither boot is a durability standout. In RunRepeat’s abrasion test the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX lost 1.0 mm of outsole and the Moab 3 Mid GTX 1.2 mm, both more than the average boot. RunRepeat rated the Anacapa’s toe box durability below average and listed easily torn mesh as a con for the Moab 3 Mid GTX. In retailer reviews most owners of both are satisfied, while a minority report fraying laces, worn-through linings or fast sole wear. Among the low shoes, the Speedgoat 6 outsole wore faster than average (1.4 mm) and the Bondi 9 slightly slower (0.9 mm).
Grip: both use Vibram
Hoka uses Vibram Megagrip on the Anacapa 2 and Speedgoat; Merrell uses Vibram TC5+, a compound formulated for Merrell. Both boots have 5 mm lugs. The Bondi 9 is the exception: it has a Durabrasion road rubber outsole and is not meant for muddy or rocky trails.
Model vs Model: The Matchups People Search For
Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX vs Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX
Same weight, same lug depth, very different feel. Pick the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX for a softer, more flexible, lower-drop boot on regular-width feet. Pick the Moab 3 Mid GTX if you want a stiffer boot, a traditional drop or a Wide size. If you do not need GORE-TEX specifically, the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof is the lower-priced Merrell option.
Hoka Speedgoat vs Merrell Moab 3
The Speedgoat is a trail-running shoe that Hoka also lists for hiking. It is far lighter than the Moab 3 and has a 5 mm drop, but RunRepeat’s owner votes say the Speedgoat 6 runs slightly small and its toe box tapers, so it suits snug fits. The newer Speedgoat 7 (9.7 oz) is sold in Regular and Wide. Merrell’s closer rival is the Moab Speed 2 (340 g per shoe, 10 mm drop, per Merrell).
Hoka Bondi 9 vs Merrell Moab 3 for walking
For pavement and park paths, the Bondi 9 is the better tool: lighter, more cushioned and shaped to roll you forward. The Moab 3 makes more sense on dirt, roots and wet grass, or when you need a Moab 3 Wide. Our best walking shoes for 2026 covers more options, and walking shoes for seniors focuses on stability.
Our Salomon vs Merrell comparison covers the Moab 3 against the X Ultra 5, and the top 10 trekking boots for 2026 lists heavier boots.
