Keen vs Merrell Hiking Boots: Targhee IV vs Moab 3 Compared
Keen or Merrell? For most hikers it comes down to two boots: the KEEN Targhee IV and the Merrell Moab 3. Choose KEEN if you have wide feet, want a toe box that lets your toes spread, and care most about a boot that stays dry and holds together. Choose Merrell if you want a lighter boot with a Vibram outsole and a closer fit than KEEN’s. Below we compare fit, waterproofing, weight, grip, break-in and what more than 1,600 owner reviews on the brands’ own sites say about durability.
Quick Answer
Choose the KEEN Targhee IV if your feet are wide or high-volume, you hike in wet conditions, and you do not mind a heavier, more boot-like feel. Choose the Merrell Moab 3 if you want less weight on your feet, a Vibram outsole with 5 mm lugs, and you do not need KEEN’s extra forefoot room (the Moab 3 also comes in Wide). If you want the KEEN fit without the weight, look at the newer KEEN Targhee Apex.
- Fit: KEEN’s “Original Fit” is built with generous forefoot room for toes to splay. Several Moab 3 Mid owners say it runs small or narrow and that they sized up.
- Weight: per KEEN and Merrell, the Targhee IV Mid weighs 570 g per boot and the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof 495 g, so the KEEN is about 75 g (2.6 oz) heavier per foot.
- Waterproofing: in owner reviews on merrell.com, leaking is the most common complaint about the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof. Only a handful of Targhee IV owners on keenfootwear.com report leaks.
- Durability: KEEN’s warranty FAQ gives the Targhee IV a lifetime guarantee against sole delamination. Merrell offers its standard one-year warranty against defects.
- Grip: Merrell uses a Vibram TC5+ outsole with 5 mm lugs; KEEN uses its own KEEN.RUGGED rubber and does not publish lug depth.

Figures for the men’s mid waterproof versions, taken from keenfootwear.com and merrell.com in October 2026. Head-to-Head: Who Wins Where
Fit and wide feet: KEEN
KEEN’s Original Fit is designed with “generous space across the forefoot for toes to splay,” and the Targhee IV comes in a separate Wide version with extra volume overall. In the 571 Targhee IV Mid reviews on keenfootwear.com, more than 50 owners mention the roomy toe box or say the boot suits wide feet. The Moab 3 also comes in Wide, but the fit pattern in its reviews is different: in 573 reviews of the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof on merrell.com, a recurring minority say it runs small or narrow through the toes and that they went up half a size. RunRepeat’s user poll for the Moab 3 Mid GTX points the same way (half a size small). If your heel slips in roomy shoes or your feet are narrow, the Merrell’s closer fit may suit you better.
Waterproofing: KEEN, unless you buy the Moab in GORE-TEX
Both brands use a waterproof, breathable membrane: KEEN.DRY in the Targhee, and in the Moab 3 Waterproof a membrane Merrell does not name on the current product page. Merrell also sells the Moab 3 Mid GORE-TEX. The owner reviews show a clear difference here. Among Moab 3 Mid Waterproof reviews on merrell.com, about 50 critical reviews describe leaks or wet feet, often from wet grass or dew. Among the Moab 3 Mid GORE-TEX reviews, we found 17 such critical reviews out of 512. Among Targhee IV Mid reviews on keenfootwear.com, we found only 4 out of 571. A few KEEN owners say the boot runs warm in summer, which is the usual trade-off of a leather boot with a membrane.
One caveat: a leaking membrane cannot be fixed with a spray. Spray-on treatments only restore the outer water repellency. See our guide on how to waterproof hiking shoes for what treatments can and cannot do.
Weight: Merrell (or the Targhee Apex)
By the manufacturers’ figures the Targhee IV Mid is 75 g heavier per boot than the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof, and the low Targhee IV is 50 g heavier than the low Moab 3 Waterproof. That is the cost of a nubuck leather upper and a durable outsole. If you like the KEEN fit but not the weight, the Targhee Apex Mid is listed at 375 g, lighter than either, with a mesh upper and KEEN’s high-rebound KEEN.ReGENX foam. Note its higher 14 mm drop.
Grip: Merrell on paper, KEEN for outsole wear
Merrell’s Vibram TC5+ outsole with 5 mm lugs is a known quantity, and dozens of Moab 3 Mid owners mention good traction in their reviews. KEEN does not publish lug depth for the KEEN.RUGGED outsole but says it is “twice as abrasion-resistant as rubber.” That is KEEN’s own claim and has not been independently measured. RunRepeat measured 1.2 mm of outsole wear on the Moab 3 Mid GTX in its abrasion test, against a 0.8 mm average for hiking boots. RunRepeat has not published measurements for the Targhee IV.
Durability and sole separation: KEEN, with a guarantee to back it
In their Targhee IV reviews, many long-time Targhee owners say the soles on earlier models peeled away. KEEN’s answer is KEEN.FUSION, which bonds the upper to the sole without glue, plus a lifetime “delamination-free” guarantee on the Targhee IV in its warranty FAQ. A few Targhee IV owners still report soles separating, and several reviewers say KEEN honored their warranty claims. On the Merrell side, sole and toe-cap separation shows up in a smaller share of Moab 3 Mid reviews than leaking does, and Merrell’s warranty covers defects for one year. Laces, lace hardware and insoles are excluded by both brands, and a few Targhee IV owners report broken lace hooks.
Break-in and comfort: tie
Both boots are bought for out-of-the-box comfort. Merrell markets the Moab 3 on it, and dozens of Targhee IV reviewers say they needed little or no break-in. The difference is feel. The Targhee IV is a stiffer, more supportive leather boot; some former Targhee III owners say the IV feels firmer and less cushioned than the version they replaced. Your foot shape matters more here than the brand.
Model vs Model: The Comparisons People Search For
KEEN Targhee IV vs Merrell Moab 3
The Targhee IV is roomier, more boot-like and backed by a delamination guarantee, and in owner reviews it has far fewer leak complaints than the Moab 3 Waterproof. The Moab 3 is lighter, has the better-documented Vibram outsole, and comes in more versions (low and mid, non-waterproof, Waterproof and GORE-TEX). For wet climates and wide feet, start with the KEEN. For dry trails, faster hiking and average feet, start with the Merrell.
Targhee IV Mid vs Moab 3 Mid GORE-TEX
If you prefer Merrell but worry about waterproofing, this is the matchup to look at. The Moab 3 Mid GORE-TEX has fewer leak complaints than the Merrell-membrane version in owner reviews, and at 490 g it is still lighter than the Targhee IV Mid.
Targhee Apex vs Moab 3
The Apex is KEEN’s lighter, faster take on the Targhee: a mesh upper, a cushioned foam midsole and the same roomy Original Fit. By manufacturer weights it is lighter than the Moab 3 in both mid and low versions. It is a newer model with far fewer owner reviews, so durability is less proven than for the Targhee IV or the Moab 3.
Keen vs Merrell vs Salomon
Salomon adds a third fit profile. The Salomon X Ultra 5 is lighter than the Targhee IV and the Moab 3 and closer-fitting than both, and RunRepeat rated its heel counter at the top of its stiffness scale. That makes it the pick for narrow to average feet on rocky, technical trails. Fit-wise, think of the three brands as KEEN roomiest, Merrell in the middle and Salomon snuggest. We cover the Merrell-Salomon matchup in detail, with lab data, in Salomon vs Merrell boots.

Are Keens wider than Merrells?

Is the Merrell Moab 3 waterproof?
The Moab 3 Waterproof and Moab 3 GORE-TEX versions have waterproof membranes; the plain Moab 3 does not. In owner reviews on merrell.com, leaks are the most common complaint about the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof. The GORE-TEX version draws far fewer.
